In search of creative growth, this blog was designed to encourage the personal betterment of those who enjoy photography as a hobby. Each month's new theme can encourage us to see the world in a different way. We all view things differently. The diversity we enjoy can fuel the creative spirit. It is hoped that we can all glean something from one another.

Frabjous - (frab-juhs) - adjective

Defined as wonderful, superb, elegant or delicious. Coined by Lewis Carroll in Through the Looking Glass; perhaps meant to suggest fabulous or joyous. Do we not feel wonderful or joyous about something we ourselves have created? Hopefully this blog will encourage us to create something frabjous!

Here is how it works. Each month will have a new theme to stimulate creative thinking. We invite people to make suggestions for upcoming themes. The month prior, you can vote for the theme you would like out of four listed. The rules are simple. No rules really. The idea is to get us to think and be mindful of the theme for the month. Take photos that relate to that theme. (However, if you have a really great shot that was taken at another time, use it.) No photo police here. Any camera will do. Even phones with cameras are pretty good these days and they are always handy. Also, if a filter or cropping enhances your photo, go for it. The digital age has given us flexibility that we should take advantage of. One to five photos can be submitted for the blog. Interpretation is up to each individual. We welcome comments.

Theme suggestions and photos can be submitted to
frabjousphoto@optonline.net. Submissions must be made no later than the last day of each month. Photos will be posted as received throughout the month. Happy snapping!

Theme for February 2011 - Black & White!

Thanks for all the great photos for January's Atmosphere theme.  The votes indicate that the February theme is Black & White.  This doesn't necessarily mean that the photos have to be taken in black & white.  Hmmm!?  Looking forward to seeing what we all come up with!

Atmospheric Roll!

Nine is the new five, at least in the case of our buddy Tom.  He has submitted nine photos.  But that is o.k.  We'll let him slide.  (Not literally, of course!)  Here are some atmosphere photos from last night's storm.

From the coldness comes a warm glow...how the atmosphere changes from
that glowing light from within the night!

The warm glow of returning home on a cold winter's night!

Seventh Storm!

The atmosphere in the Northeast this year is cold and snowy!  Add to that icey!  The snow is always a wonderment to me but I must admit that I am getting tired of shoveling!  Here are two shots from this morning.

The Moon at Noon

O.k.  None of these pictures are of the moon at noon, but it sounded like a good title.  These are some shots looking through our atmosphere to the moon.

Only in New York!

This just in from Kryptonite:  Cookie Monster on the xylophone added an atmosphere of exhilaration to an otherwise moribund train station.

Atmospheric Interference!

This truly is a commentary on the times we live in!  An unsightly tower that reaches into the atmosphere.  This tower also contributes to the endless amount of wireless transmissions that now travel through the atmosphere.  It really is a huge eyesore in comparison to Jehovah's beautiful creations!

This tower was located on the South Service Road of the LIE at Exit 56.  Submitted by Linda.  Taken with her HTC Evo cell phone.

Someone's Watching!

This from Tom, "I was driving this morning, January 17th, and seeing this in the atmosphere reminded me of Proverbs 15:3 which states, "...the eyes of Jehovah are in every place...""

Fairy Tale House

O.k.  It's not really.  It is a guardhouse at a townhouse complex.  But it looks like a little cottage in the wood.  (I've always had a good imagination.)  And it has that glowing light from the window on a cold, snowy morning thing going on.  This was taken after our third snow of the season (and it is only January 12!)

Gore Atmosphere

Well, Kryptonite didn't say how this makes him feel, but when I look at these pictures, I think back to my skiing days.  On overcast days the mountains were often foggy, windy and COLD.   It kind of gave me a lonely feeling, even thought there may have been lots of people around.

I did a doubletake!

Six-thirty a.m.  All was grey and snow covered.  Grey and white were the predominant colors of the morning.  As I walked by the bedroom window, I literally did a doubletake.  The glow of pinkish/orange caught my eye.  I ran for the camera.  The sun was shining through the early morning atmosphere and created this beautiful glow on the trees.  It looks like an altered photo, but it is not.  It is another example of Jehovah's handiwork!

Atmosphere and Altered Atmosphere

The reflection of a candle's glow definately creates atmosphere.  Below is an altered view of the same photo.  It evokes a different atmosphere.

Winter Wonderland

Snow on trees draws photographers like honey draws bears, or nuts draw squirrels, or...well, you the picture.  Though many hate the cold weather, freshly fallen snow is a beautiful sight.

Interpretive Atmosphere!

So...the rule is that interpretation is up to the photographer.  When I received this photo, I asked how this connects to our January theme.  Simple, Tom said.  I've posted his response below the photo.

And I quote, "If you don't like the Atmosphere where you are, just try flapping your wings and see if you can change it as quickly."

Unexpected Burst of Snow!

Just when we thought that it was over, we got about an hours worth of heavy snow.  You know, those big, wet flakes that stick to everything.  Well, they did stick to the roads, the cars, and every nib of every branch of every tree, turning everything into a (and here's the atmosphere) winter wonderland!

Instant Atmosphere!

Few things can change the atmosphere as well and as easily as a candle.  It can evoke that warm cozy feeling.  A beautiful hurricane glass adds to the effect.  I bet it is being used on this snowy night!

Quattro Gastronomia Italiana

In addition to the great food, the name of this restaurant is quite a mouthful as well!  It looks like a restaurant with alot of atmosphere!

A Tree is Calling

This tree was really calling out to me.  We had to actually go in in a stranger's backyard to take the photo.  What is the atmosphere, you may ask?  Well, this tree, standing by itself, is perched right at the edge of the Long Island Sound.  I don't know what it looks like in the summer, but in the winter it looked cold and lonely.  That is the feeling it evoked.  It certainly is very beautiful though.

All the days the earth continues, there will never be a sunset that is duplicated!  We never fail to marvel at the beauty of each and every one.

Fog

 FOG

The fog comes
on little cat feet.

It sits looking
over harbor and city
on silent haunches
and then moves on.

My mom loved this poem by Carl Sandburg, so I thought I'd share it in view of yesterday's foggy start.  Took this shot at about 6:30 am through my bathroom window.

To Know Me is to Love Me!

Anyone who knows me, knows that I just love that warm cozy feeling you (or at least I) get when you are outside on a cold night and you spot a house with the glow of warmth eminating from the window.  It makes you (or at least me) want to transfer from your cold surroundings into the warmth of the room.  I can't very well go around and take pictures into other people's windows, so I took one at my own house.  Romeo was wondering what I was doing!

Fire Island Lighthouse

Mike starts off the month with a photo of the Fire Island Lighthouse.  The atmosphere is maybe, ominous or forboding?  Mysterious or gloomy?
