In search of creative growth, this blog was designed to encourage the personal betterment of those who enjoy photography as a hobby. Each month's new theme can encourage us to see the world in a different way. We all view things differently. The diversity we enjoy can fuel the creative spirit. It is hoped that we can all glean something from one another.
Frabjous - (frab-juhs) - adjective
Defined as wonderful, superb, elegant or delicious. Coined by Lewis Carroll in Through the Looking Glass; perhaps meant to suggest fabulous or joyous. Do we not feel wonderful or joyous about something we ourselves have created? Hopefully this blog will encourage us to create something frabjous!
Here is how it works. Each month will have a new theme to stimulate creative thinking. We invite people to make suggestions for upcoming themes. The month prior, you can vote for the theme you would like out of four listed. The rules are simple. No rules really. The idea is to get us to think and be mindful of the theme for the month. Take photos that relate to that theme. (However, if you have a really great shot that was taken at another time, use it.) No photo police here. Any camera will do. Even phones with cameras are pretty good these days and they are always handy. Also, if a filter or cropping enhances your photo, go for it. The digital age has given us flexibility that we should take advantage of. One to five photos can be submitted for the blog. Interpretation is up to each individual. We welcome comments.
Theme suggestions and photos can be submitted to frabjousphoto@optonline.net. Submissions must be made no later than the last day of each month. Photos will be posted as received throughout the month. Happy snapping!

Last Attempt at Capturing Motion!
The photo below was taken with my iPhone using the ChronoCam app. It shows the progression of a red bandana blowing in the breeze. I do believe I need a little more practice with this app. Perhaps I will have some "unexpected" results with it next month!

July Theme - Unexpected
So just what exactly should we expect from our "Unexpected" theme? It remains to be seen. This theme certainly leaves a lot of latitude for interpretation! Please be sure to explain how your photo fits the theme. Interpolation on my part would be an impossiblity!! If you need some fodder, here is a definition of Unexpected: unforeseen; surprising; an unexpected pleasure; an unexpected development. If you are still befuddled, check the Thesaurus. There are alot of synonyms for "Unexpected" that might jump start your creativity.
I have to comment on the great job for June. Capturing Motion was not the easiest subject. It was nice to see everyone's efforts. "Unexpected" may present another challenge, but I think we will have fun with it. As usual, can't wait to see what you all come up with!!

State Parks Summer Run Series
Although these marathon bibs are currently stationary, they represent intense motion each summer Monday night at a different Long Island Park, along with 2,000 other bibs attached to runners of all ages.

Learning from One Another
One of the stated purposes of this Blog is to stretch our creativity. One way we do this is by picking up points and ideas from one another. Mike sent some motion shots. Some were taken with a little help from Kryptonite.
The above was taken with a 2 second shutter speed and a little camera shake.
The illusion of motion is captured in the above three photos. The shutter speed was between 1.3 and 2.0 as I zoomed in and out, focused on my TV.

UFO!
Not really! While working with Regional today in Inwood, which happens to be right next to Kennedy Airport, I was able to capture this plane coming in for a landing.
The above shot and the next one were both taken with an iPhone app that has a slow shutter speed. Used different settings for each photo and they came out quite differently, as you can see! The one below was also a plane coming in for a landing!

Polynesian Dancers and a Barrel O' Rum
Took these dancers in motion while downing a Barrel O' Rum at the Premiere Polynesian Restaurant in the US......Mai Kai in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. It was exposure (not the rum) that blurred the action!

Two Trains Passing in the Night!
This unusual photo was taken as two trains were passing. It is hard to describe the composition, but it definately shouts, "motion!"

Light Trails
While driving on Northern State Parkway, (I wasn't driving) I used an app on my iPhone to try to capture some light trails. First of all, the photographer is supposed to be stationary, but I figured I'd give it a try anyway. The photos I was getting were just "ok" until we hit a bump in the road. This mishap turned out to be the most interesting shot.

Doggy Play Date!
Romeo met his buddies, Brewser and Petie at the Dog Park today. Brewser just wanted to play ball.
Good thing Brewser is part Whippet. He is a very fast runner. Because these guys also wanted to play ball:
They were really big, but not quite as fast. Had a fun afternoon at the park.

A Night at the Ball Game
Kyle in Action!
These two shots were taken using a longer exposure - .4 seconds with a flash at the second curtain to freeze the end of the shot.
This shot uses a 1.3 second exposure - while the ball is stationary, illusion of motion is added by zooming into the ball during exposure.

As the Worm Squirms
I have been assured by the photographer that the inchworm was actually moving, even if the photo didn't capture the action. I believe him. If you were about to be eaten, you'd be moving too!

Changing of the Guard!
I was trying to get a photo for www.birdingandbonding.com. I had just taken a good picture of the male Oriole above his nest. The very next shot captured the female flying out of the nest. The male had been bringing home the tidbits for the brood. Now it was the turn of the female. So while the male stayed at the nest, the female was off and running (o.k., flying)! This picture was suited to the theme of the month: Capturing Motion. Unfortunately, the camera focused on the branches in the backround rather that the birds! I think you get the motion thing though!
